Are you making conscious choices in your life? What if you could do this all the time, would your life be different?
Years ago, I had an epiphany. I remember entering the classroom, carefully picking my seat, ready and excited to learn more about coaching. Our teacher, who was usually very kind and easy going, asked the group who hadn't done their homework.
Three students raised their hands. She said calmly, I’d like to ask you to leave the classroom. We were all adults, so it seemed a bit harsh. What I noticed was that the first student reacted very upset, and angrily left the room. The second student started to apologize and was looking for ways to stay. The third student just sat still and said nothing.
The teacher explained to us that there is always a gap between action and reaction.
This gap allows you to determine which reaction you wish to give.
So instead of acting immediately, take a few seconds to quickly clear your mind and think of your desired outcome.
As simple as it may sound, this technique has helped me in so many ways and has made me realize that you always have a choice.
I’d like to challenge you to do the following the coming weeks:
When something happens that may upset you or spark your ego, do something different than what you normally would do or say. Surprise yourself and notice the difference.
Eckhart Tolle has written a great book called “A New Earth” about (expanding) the gap.
Have a great week!
