Why diversity and inclusion works!
More and more companies are focussing on diversity and inclusion.
But what exactly is “diversity”?
According to the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) it means “the collective mixture of differences and similarities that include, for example, individual and organizational characteristics, values, beliefs, experiences, backgrounds, preferences, and behaviors.”
Building a workforce of diverse people who are empowered to positively contribute to a
company’s success has many benefits:
Reputation and Recruiting Talent
Providing opportunities for a larger group will enhance your reputation as a good employer and
will give you access to new markets which will result in recruiting top talent.
Global Opportunities By creating diverse teams within your workplace you are creating a valuable resource that can help you and your business to communicate and connect with new customers.
Improving your Image
Recruiting staff for the right reasons and having a clear and positive mission statement often translates into higher productivity, growth and an enhanced brand image, which appeals to customers.
How to create a positive attitude towards diversity and inclusion?
Treat people in a way they wish to be treated rather than the way you wish to be treated.
What seems comfortable for you may not be comfortable for everyone. Ask rather then assume.
Take time out of you schedule to learn from your colleagues for example organizing speed dates.
Always be respectful.
In all my previous working experiences, whether it was in the corporate world or working for the government, in Europe, Africa or the US, I’ve always embraced diversity. This not only made me humble, eager to learn more about other cultures, and be more emphatic, but also made me see the beauty in diversity rather than the challenges.
We can not choose where we’re born, but we can choose to embrace opportunities and contribute to a better workplace.
Have a great work week everyone!
